Differences between Vertical and Horizontal Silos

Cement silosare long cylindrical structures used to store a variety of different materials. Various industries such as manufacturing, mining, construction need silos or mixing plants to carry out their daily operations, including mixing and distributing cement mixes for their projects. Silos can be of various types, mobile or stationary and horizontal or vertical. When looking for cement storage silos, one of the biggest decisions you need to make is whether to go for vertical or horizontal silos.

In this article, we will explore some of the key differences between these two types of silos and hopefully you will be able to determine which one is more suitable for you.

Vertical Cement Silo

Vertical silos offer a wide range of applications and are most commonly circular or orthogonal in their geometry. The main difference of these silos is that they take up more space in the sky and can have a customizable diversion hopper flow cone at the bottom to handle any type of load. Common materials used in the manufacture of vertical silos include stainless steel, concrete and carbon steel plates, depending on the weather conditions in your area. Vertical silos are probably the most widely used cement storage silos and can come with a wide range of different attachments. Some applications for vertical silos include:

  • Storage of granular or powdered materials.
  • Storage of adhesive materials with high humidity.
  • Storage of abrasive materials such as clinker in the cement industry or crushed glass in the glass industry.

The capacity of vertical silos within MRM Concrete Batching Plants are 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 250, 300, 500 and 1000 tons.

Horizontal Cement Silo

Horizontal silos are an option in projects where cranes are not available, mooring is not possible or there is no space for a vertical silo. Horizontal silos can be made portable. This makes installation quick and easy.

Mobile horizontal silos are often used for construction sites, road works and urban work operations and are easy and convenient to transport. Horizontal silos can discharge materials through the cement auger.

The entire system can be controlled by an electronic control panel and display system, making it easy to operate.
